Dr. Karin D. Bump is a recognized leader in equine welfare, nonprofit governance, and organizational policy, bringing together a lifelong passion for horses with expertise in science, education, and leadership. She serves as Chief Operating Officer of the EQUUS Foundation, where she helps advance standards of care, transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability within the horse industry.
Karin holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in animal science from the University of Illinois, with a research focus on equine nutrition and exercise physiology, providing a strong scientific foundation in equine health and management. She earned her Ph.D. in higher education administration and policy studies from the University at Albany, where her research examined organizational legitimacy, governance, and public trust—areas that continue to inform her work at the intersection of equine welfare, public policy, and nonprofit oversight.
As the only national animal welfare organization in the United States dedicated solely to the dual mission of protecting America’s horses and strengthening the horse-human bond, the EQUUS Foundation works to promote transparency, accountability, and best practices across the equine welfare sector. Through its accreditation, education, and grantmaking programs, the Foundation has developed extensive knowledge of the diverse roles horses play in American society and the policies and practices that impact their welfare and protection.
A frequent conference speaker and trusted advisor, Karin is particularly interested in the evolving relationship between horses and society and the implications that changing perceptions may have for equine welfare, public policy, and the future of the horse industry. She is committed to fostering thoughtful dialogue that supports both the well-being of horses and the people and organizations dedicated to their care.
