Christopher Berry

Christopher Berry is the Chief Strategy Officer at the Nonhuman Rights Project, where he manages the organization’s strategy to secure fundamental legal rights for nonhuman animals. Over the course of his career, he has opened new pathways for animal legal rights. At the Animal Legal Defense Fund, he managed a successful effort to obtain a judge’s recognition of Colombia’s hippopotamuses as “interested persons” entitled to obtain witness testimony in the United States under 28 U.S.C. section 1782. At the Nonhuman Rights Project, Christopher created programming to establish anticruelty protections as rights held by the animals themselves, resulting in the first “Freedom from Cruelty” case which was filed on behalf of farmed dogs illegally confined at Ridglan Farms.
