Marine Lercier is a PhD candidate in global animal law and a doctoral researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where she has taught animal law and Roman law. She holds a master’s degree in animal law and society (with high honors), as well as master’s degrees in international and European law, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, international human rights Law, and transitional justice.
Her research develops the emerging field of Animal Labour Law ©, exploring legal frameworks for recognizing labor rights for non-human animals. Using racehorses as a case study, she advocates for a legal right to retire beyond their racing careers.
She is the founder and executive director of the International Centre for Animal Rights and Ethics (ICARE), and co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Animal Rights Law. She also serves on the board of the Culture and Animals Foundation. In 2022, she ran as a candidate in the French parliamentary elections with the Animalist Party.
